Foster and Kinship Carer Assessments

Shilus has completed over 100 high-quality independent General and Kinship foster carer assessments to a variety of Foster Care Agencies across South East Queensland over the past 4 years. We are able to provide:

  • General Foster Carer Initial and Renewal Assessments,
  • Kinship Foster Carer Initial and Renewal Assessments,
  • Specialist Foster Carer Assessments,
  • Interstate Carer Initial and Renewal Assessments, and
  • Suitability Assessments (see Suitability Assessments on page 3)

Our highly experienced team of assessors provide assessments which holistically assess against the Standards of Care, whilst also identifying potential areas of need or training required ensuring they are able to provide the best care for children in out of home care. Our assessors ensure that our process is completed from a “through a child’s eyes” perspective, to ensure we are providing recommendation based on what is best for a child/ren in out of home care.

At Shilus we utilise a single contact model, where the same assessor will follow through from referral through to report completion and presentation at the Foster Care Assessment Panel.

We pride ourselves on providing the highest levels of professionalism and communication to both Foster Care Agencies and the prospective Foster Carers because we understand how daunting and unfamiliar this process can be for applicants and families.

Our normal assessment process includes 4-8 hours of interviews and observations in the applicant’s home over a number of occasions. These interviews and assessments are guided by Departmental policies, procedures and guidelines, and all reports are reviewed by a lead clinician to ensure quality of assessment and report.

These assessments are based on a psychosocial model of assessment where evidence is gained to identify how the applicant meets the operationalised standards of care. Information gathering and psychoeducation are used to offer you quality carers.

Shilus is proud of our ability to consistently provide unbiased, independent, high-quality, respectful foster carer assessments. We ensure the ongoing quality of our assessments through ongoing one-on-one and group-based supervision and training for all of our Assessors.
