Shilus understands the unique requirements and challenges present within the Disability Support setting, and the need to reflect currency of practice in everything support workers and disability support staff do. Our training modules have been designed to meet the operational and legislative requirements of the Disability Support sector, with content specific to the unique operational challenges of a disability support worker. With over 20 years’ combined experience across human services, behaviour management and injury prevention, Shilus is able to provide your staff with training that not only meets your duty of care and legislative obligations, but is highly relevant to your staff’s day to day operations. Surveys of staff have found 80% prefer face-to-face education, which we completely agree with! All our training is delivered face-to-face on-site or at a location of your choosing, and can be delivered after hours or on the weekend for no additional fee. We frequently deliver training interstate and overseas. Our training is workshop based which supports staff to apply knowledge to their specific circumstance and encourages participation in the learning process. We are also able to develop and deliver custom training modules according to your needs. We are able to work closely with your organisation to plan and organise the most time and cost-efficient method of training your staff. All our training is delivered on-site or at a location of your choosing, and can be delivered after hours or on the weekend for no additional fee.  We are also able to develop and deliver custom training modules according to your needs from only $550 ex GST for 2 hours.

Difference Between Disabilities and Impairments This workshop covers many different types of impairments and how they affect the person. This workshop can also support lifestyle facilitators to understand how to support people with various physical and intellectual impairments in a way that is value based and inclusive. 120 min
Choice and Decision Facilitation Workshop These workshops encourage support staff and carers to facilitate effective choice and decision facilitation for those they support 120 min
Least Restrictive Alternative Workshop This workshop covers how to be an effective support worker and to maximize lifestyle opportunities within a least restrictive framework. This workshop also covers basic restrictive practices policies and how to ensure that you are always working within a person centered framework. 120 min
Completing Organisational Documentation This workshop equips staff with the necessary skills they need to navigate smartly through the various documentation requirements in the workplace, including general report writing. 90 min
Rights Versus Interests Providing carers and staff with a conceptual understanding of a person’s rights, interests, and providing care that balances both these and the carer’s/support agency’s interests and requirements 120 min
Confidentiality Provides a conceptual understanding of confidentiality, what it means for their role, and how to ensure they meet all privacy and confidentiality legislation. 90 min
Medication Handling, Storage and Administration These workshops have been particularly popular with services that are seeking to meet Quality Assurance requirements and/or managing a detected area of risk within the service. 120 min
Communication and Team Building Disability Support services is a team-working environment. It is absolutely essential that support workers are able to communicate effectively and appropriately, both internally and externally, to ensure their team functions most successfully. This workshop provides participants with practical information and practice on how to communicate effectively with others and the importance of working as a team. This workshop also explores communication barriers and provides participants with a basic understanding of conflict resolution. 120 min
Workplace Bullying and Harassment With workplace bullying and harassment claims at their highest levels, and the subsequent time and financial cost incurred by organisations in managing them, it is more important than ever that staff understand what bullying and harassment means for them. This workshop provides participants with information about what is bullying and harassment, reasonable vs. unreasonable behavior, impacts on people and organisations, and what actions to take in response to bullying and harassment. 120 min

Client Health and Wellbeing Modules
Our Client Health and Wellbeing modules are designed to provide support workers with the most up-to-date, evidence-based practical information and skills to ensure the health and wellbeing of the people in their care.

Module Time*
Gender Empowerment Sexuality Workshop Aimed to provide lifestyle facilitators, support workers and/or carers with the right tools and ability to successfully facilitate rights and choice for people with a disability, while negotiating those complex family relationships that impact on independence and autonomy. 120 min
Behaviour Management Level 1 Training Our Level 1 Behaviour Management module aims to provide staff with an introduction to Behaviour Management. Specifically, this workshop aims to provide staff with an understanding of how to identify challenging behaviours and their antecedent (or cause). This module also provides tried-and-tested strategies to promote positive behavior. Being able to understand the cause and function of a behavior is absolutely essential to implementing an effective Behaviour Management Strategy. 3 hours
Behaviour Management Level 2 Training Our Level 2 Behaviour Management module aims to provide staff with an understanding of how they can take information gathered during the behavior assessment process and implement effective behavior management strategies. This module includes workshop time dedicated to discussion of client-specific behavior challenges. 3 hours
Client/Service Specific Behaviour Workshops Where a service has a specific client, facility or behavior concern that they are having trouble with, Shilus is able to offer 1-hour workshops with the relevant staff to help put in place effective strategies. Usually these workshops will include observation of the client in the relevant environment followed by a facilitated workshop to identify the antecedent and function of the behavior and provide effective behavior management strategies to implement. 60 min
Managing Aggression An interactive workshop aimed at providing carers and support workers with a conceptual understanding of communication in the disability support setting, specifically focussing on aggression and how they can best manage it. 120 min

Label Reading Workshop This interactive workshop will give you all the skills you need to understand food labels and make healthy choices 60 min
Managing Food and Drink When Swallowing Problems Occur An interactive and informative workshop to equip participants with skills and knowledge surrounding dysphagia, texture modified meals and thickened fluids. Participants will gain hands-on experience in the provision of texture modified meals and fluids.   120 min

Our Staff Health and Wellbeing workshops have been developed to help professionals working within the disability support setting manage their own physical, emotional, cognitive and psychological health.

Manual Handling Training Our highly practical and enjoyable Manual Handling Workshop is one of our most popular modules. Our workshop provides staff with essential practical Manual Handling skills that are specific to the challenges of the Disability support Setting. 120 min
Workplace Health and Safety Interactive workshop designed to enable your staff to effectively identify and manage all risks in the workplace through an understanding of the WH&S Legislation and Risk Assessment and Management Practices. 120 min
Fire Safety Training – WARDEN LEVEL (Compliance) More in-depth than traditional Fire Awareness Training, this training ensures that your staff meets its legislative requirements. This training has been developed with the Disability support and Respite Setting in mind, providing participants with the competence and confidence to operate different types of fire equipment available. Includes Fire Extinguisher practical 120 min
Staff Resilience Training – Mental Health Our Staff Resilience Training has been designed to provide your staff with the knowledge to identify signs of emotional and psychological stress and provide them with strategies they can implement to prevent burn out. This workshop has been highly regarded by participants because it has provided them with key tools to identify their own signs of stress and work out the strategies that work best for them to manage their own personal and professional stress. 3 hours
Staff Resilience Training – Physical Health Staff resilience isn’t just about mental and psychological health. Working in the disability support sector is highly physical and staff often find themselves suffering from physical fatigue. Poor physical health or fitness is a leading cause of staff early retirement from the industry or work all together. This workshop is designed to provide staff with an understanding of how their bodies work, how they can ensure their own physical health and fitness, including activities and exercises they can implement into their day with their clients and work around their own busy lives. This workshop includes a fun, interactive Pilates session to promote core strength. 3 hours
Understanding Vicarious Trauma Staff can be exposed to clients who themselves have or are currently experiencing trauma, abuse or other adverse events. The essential act of listening to trauma stories can take an emotional toll that can compromise an educators professional functioning and their own quality of life. Indirect or vicarious trauma can present similarly to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and can have a wide range of effects personally and professionally for an educator or staff member. This workshop is designed to provide support workers and staff with an understanding of vicarious trauma and its effects, how they can provide caring practices whilst protecting themselves, and effective self-care strategies. 120 min
Infection Control Having a practical understanding of effective hygiene and infection control practices are essential in the disability support setting to ensure a safe and hygienic environment and prevent the spread of disease and contamination. This workshop is designed to provide industry-specific knowledge about infection control and hygiene practices in the disability support setting and how they can support everyone to be a part of these practices. This workshop includes an overview of the regulations and policies around infection control. 120 min

Manager/Supervisor Modules
Our Manager/Supervisor modules have been designed to provide strategies and tools to those in charge to facilitate a caring, efficient and profitable disability support facility and/or support services.

Module Time*
Looking After Your Team! All managers and supervisors know the importance of having a happy, healthy and efficient team, but this isn’t something that always comes easily or without work. This workshop is about providing managers and supervisors with an understanding of team culture, including its introduction at the recruitment/induction stage through to ongoing staff engagement and performance management. This workshop will explore HR strategies to engage your staff to reduce staff turnover, sick leave and improve overall staff engagement. 120 min
Managing Change Where there are organizational, service or other changes within a service, it is ultimately the staff within the centre that will need to change. Where staff doesn’t embrace these changes, the new initiatives can fail and team engagement can suffer significantly. This workshop provides managers and supervisors with an understanding of how they can prepare, equip and support their staff to successfully adopt change to ensure their service’s success. 120 min
Succession Planning Effective succession planning is about ensuring leadership continuity and building the talent of the team to ensure that they have the skills, experience and knowledge to meet any changing needs in the service. This planning and development will also help to improve the engagement of staff and reduce staff turnover. This workshop provides management and supervisors with strategies to identify and develop high-potential staff within their organisation according to their own personal development goals. 120 min
