Shilus understands the unique requirements and challenges present within the childcare, early years and school settings, and the need to reflect currency of practice in everything educators do. Our training modules have been designed to meet the requirements of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and National Quality Framework (NQF), with content specific to the unique operational challenges of a childcare educator. With over 20 years’ combined experience across child safety/ protection, child behaviour management and injury prevention, Shilus is able to provide your staff with training that not only meets your duty of care and legislative obligations, but is highly relevant to your staff’s day to day operations. All our training is delivered on-site or at a location of your choosing, and can be delivered after hours or on the weekend for no additional fee. We frequently deliver training interstate and overseas. Our training is workshop based which supports staff to apply knowledge to their specific circumstance and encourages participation in the learning process. We are also able to develop and deliver custom training modules according to your needs. Shilus offers tailored coaching and mentoring in the Childcare and Early Learning setting. Partnering with Families This interactive workshop is designed to provide educators with strategies to best engage with families and other members of the caring community to provide best practice. NQS Area 6 – Collaborative Partnerships with Children, Families and Communities. 120 min
Professionally Ethical! This workshop aims to provide participants with an opportunity to consider the NQS ethical and professional challenges in their workplace, the profession and the wider community and how this may impact on their own practice. Participants will be encouraged to consider their own responses to these challenges whilst considering their legal responsibilities and the care they provide for children. Being an Observational Educator Observing and recording the development, behavior and activity of the little ones in our care is an essential part of being an educator in the childcare setting. This workshop provides educators with the tools to understand when, what and how to become more observational and how they are able to record information that is meaningful for themselves and their service. Communication and Team Building Early education and childcare is a team-working environment. It is absolutely essential that educators are able to communicate effectively and appropriately, both internally and externally, to ensure their team functions most successfully. This workshop provides participants with practical information and practice on how to communicate effectively with others in their centre and the importance of working as a team. This workshop also explores communication barriers and provides participants with a basic understanding of conflict resolution. NQS Area 4 – Standards and Elements 120 min
Workplace Bullying and Harassment With workplace bullying and harassment claims at their highest levels, and the subsequent time and financial cost incurred by centres in managing them, it is more important than ever that educators understand what bullying and harassment means for them. This workshop provides participants with information about what is bullying and harassment, reasonable vs. unreasonable behavior, impacts on people and organisations, and what actions to take in response to bullying and harassment. Fire Safety Training – WARDEN LEVEL (Compliance) More in-depth than traditional Fire Awareness Training, this highly interactive and interesting training ensures that your staff meets its legislative Workplace Health and Safety requirements. This training has been developed with the Early Learning Setting in mind, providing participants with the competence and confidence to operate different types of fire equipment available. Dealing with Families Under Stress We all know how stressful family life can be, especially when you have young children, and sometimes families just need a little hand to support them. This workshop is designed to provide educators and staff with strategies they can employ to sensitively support families under stress, and where they can refer families, parents and other carers for further support if necessary. This workshop also explores the importance of educators setting boundaries and how they can work within these. NQS Area 6 – Collaborative Partnerships with Children, Families and Communities 120 min

Our Child Health and Wellbeing modules are designed to provide educators with the most up-to-date, evidence-based practical information and skills to ensure the health and wellbeing of the children in their care.

Module Time*
Child Development Workshop Using the latest evidence base in Child Development, this workshop explores the physical and emotional development of a child, and what activities educators can employ to support their development. This workshop is about educators understanding a child’s social development, and support of, has in their ability to learn and grow. We will provide educators with a practical understanding of how they can use the theory of scaffolding to help children to learn more productively from both their educators and other children in the class. Child Mental Health We all know that experiences in a child’s early years can affect their long-term mental health, relationships and learning. This workshop has been developed to provide educators with a practical understanding of what mental health problems exist and can be identified in early childhood. It will provide participants with tried-and-tested strategies they can implement to help support a child as well as how they can facilitate positive mental health in their centre. Child Safety and Protection – Introduction Supporting your staff to have a conceptual and practical understanding of their role in Child Protection. This includes their legal obligations in relation to providing Child Protection and notification. This workshop will also provide educators with an overview of the physical, behavioural and functional signs of harm. This training is tailored to the state in which the centre is based to ensure that the appropriate legislation is covered during the sessions. NQS Area 2 – Children’s Health and Safety 2-3 hours
Child Safety and Protection – Intensive Program This module includes all the information of our Basic Program, but also includes more in-depth information and understanding of the various forms of abuse, identifying indicators of harm, and how they can implement early intervention strategies. This training is tailored to the state in which the centre is based to ensure that the appropriate legislation is covered during the sessions. Can be split and delivered over 2 sessions/evenings. Developing Protective Behaviours Designed to complement our Child Safety and Protection modules, this workshop is designed to provide educators with strategies to support young children to develop strong protective behaviours to protect themselves against harm. This workshop will provide practical learning strategies and experiences educators can use with young children and also work with families to increase their awareness of protective behaviours. Supporting the Grieving Child The feelings that children may experience following loss and the impact that it can have on their lives is important for educators to understand in order to help support them through this time. This workshop will provide educators with an understanding of the grieving process for children, and provide them with strategies to help them support children and help them cope. Rest and Relaxation Sleep and rest are absolutely essential to a child’s healthy brain development, physical growth and ability to learn. This workshop aims to provide educators with an understanding of the role that rest and relaxation has for development and learning, and how they can practically support individual children’s rest requirments and provide opportunities for calming and relaxation. Safe Food Handling Workshop This workshop provides educators and staff with an understanding of the importance of safe food handling at home and in the childcare centre. This workshop also provides staff with a practical understanding of how this can be achieved through food storage, handling and preparation processes. Managing Allergies and Intolerances Understanding the plethora of allergies, intolerances and other digestive disorders is a common problem for educators and childcare centres. This session aims to provide staff with all the facts on allergies and intolerances common to the childhood and early learning setting, how they can identify and prevent reactions, and strategies to manage them. Label Reading Workshop One of the key challenges parents and educators face is understanding food and food labels. We know we need to make healthy choices for our children and ourselves but how do we know that we are? This practical workshop provides staff with an understanding of food contents and labeling to enable them to make healthier choices for themselves, their families and the children in their centre. Nutrition and Food Safety This workshop provides educators and staff with an understanding of the latest news, evidence and information relating to healthy nutrition in the early childhood setting. Child Behaviour Modules
With extensive training and experience in delivery of Child Behaviour Assessment, Management and Consultancy across childcare, private and government industries, Shilus is able to provide your centre with high quality, practical and tailored specialized Behaviour Training.

Module Time*
Child Behaviour Management Level 1 Training Our Level 1 Behaviour Management module aims to provide educators and staff with an introduction to Child Behaviour Management. Specifically, this workshop aims to provide staff with an understanding of how to identify challenging behaviours and their antecedent (or cause). This module also provides tried-and-tested strategies to promote positive behavior in each room. Being able to understand the cause and function of a behavior is absolutely essential to implementing an effective Behaviour Management Strategy. Child Behaviour Management Level 2 Training Our Level 2 Behaviour Management module aims to provide educators and staff with an understanding of how they can take information gathered during the behavior assessment process and implement effective behavior management strategies. This module includes workshop time dedicated to discussion of centre-specific behavior challenges. Child Behaviour Management Level 3 Training Our level 3 Behaviour Management module explores the challenges implementing behavioural change can pose, including working with tired and exhausted parents, working with children that may have special needs, and working within the boundaries of their role. Child/Service Specific Behaviour Workshops Where a childcare service has a specific child, room or behavior concern that they are having trouble with, Shilus is able to offer 1-hour workshops with the relevant educators and staff to help put in place effective strategies. Usually these workshops will include observation of the child in the room followed by a facilitated workshop to identify the antecedent and function of the behavior and provide effective behavior management strategies to implement. Facilitating Conflict Resolution within the Early Learning Setting This workshop is about providing educators with the skills to support a child to manage their own behaviour, respond appropriately to the behaviour of others, and communicate effectively to resolve conflicts. Though this training focuses on conflict resolution between children, it will also address conflict resolution between staff and other members of the team and carers. Understanding Autism and Its Impact on Behaviour This workshop provides participants with the opportunities to understand ASD, its impact on a child’s behaviour and learning, and how you can implement positive behaviour support in the childcare setting. Settling and Supporting Anxious and Agitated Children This workshop provides educators with an overview of why some children become anxious easily and/or agitated, and provides educators with skills to minimise the impact in the Early Learning Setting. Staff Health and Wellbeing
Our Staff Health and Wellbeing workshops have been developed to help professionals working within the childcare and early learning setting manage their own physical, emotional, cognitive and psychological health.

Module Time*
Staff Resilience Training – Mental Health Our Staff Resilience Training has been designed to provide your staff with the knowledge to identify signs of emotional and psychological stress and provide them with strategies they can implement to prevent burn out. This workshop has been highly regarded by participants because it has provided them with key tools to identify their own signs of stress and work out the strategies that work best for them to manage their own personal and professional stress. Staff Resilience Training – Physical Health Staff resilience isn’t just about mental and psychological health. Working in the childcare and early learning sector is highly physical and staff often find themselves suffering from physical fatigue. Poor physical health or fitness is a leading cause of staff early retirement from the industry or work all together. This workshop is designed to provide staff with an understanding of how their bodies work, how they can ensure their own physical health and fitness, including activities and exercises they can implement into their day with the children and work around their own busy lives. Understanding Vicarious Trauma Educators and staff are exposed to children and families who themselves have or are currently experiencing trauma, abuse or other adverse events. The essential act of listening to trauma stories can take an emotional toll that can compromise an educators professional functioning and their own quality of life. Indirect or vicarious trauma can present similarly to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and can have a wide range of effects personally and professionally for an educator or staff member. This workshop is designed to provide educators and staff with an understanding of vicarious trauma and its effects, how they can provide caring practices whilst protecting themselves, and effective self-care strategies. Promoting Calm This workshop has been designed to provide childcare and early learning centres with a fun workshop all about promoting calm and wellness in their centre. The session is focused on providing teams that may be currently under a larger than normal stress level with a group-based stress management workshop. Using tools including meditation, mindfulness and relaxation, staff will leave the session calm, centred and with an understanding of how they can achieve this state themselves. Infection Control Having a practical understanding of effective hygiene and infection control practices are essential in the childcare and early learning setting to ensure a safe and hygienic environment and prevent the spread of disease and contamination. This workshop is designed to provide industry-specific knowledge about infection control and hygiene practices in the childcare setting and how they can support children to be a part of these practices. This workshop includes an overview of the regulations and policies around infection control. Manual Handling Training Our highly practical and enjoyable Manual Handling Workshop is one of our most popular modules. Our workshop provides staff with essential practical Manual Handling skills that are specific to the challenges of the Early Learning Setting, including lifting children, working at very low heights, and the dangers of storage to prevent physical injury to themselves and others. Looking After Your Team! All directors and nominated supervisors know the importance of having a happy, healthy and efficient team, but this isn’t something that always comes easily or without work. This workshop is about providing directors and nominated supervisors with an understanding of team culture, including its introduction at the recruitment/induction stage through to ongoing staff engagement and performance management. This workshop will explore HR strategies to engage your staff to reduce staff turnover, sick leave and improve overall staff engagement.
